Let me say first that I have a new job. I write document management software for a company that build secure internet proxy systems.
That said, I’ve had quite a ride for the last 2-3 months.
So this is my story… let me first tell you about getting a resume, and this company called Right Management. When I got laid off, one of the things that Williams did was pay a managment consulting firm to assist with re-placement. This was actually a really great thing for them to do for me.
So, about 3 days after i got laid off, i gave them a call.
Me - “Hi I’d like to get some help with my resume”
RM - “Well, we have a wonderful program here, that we know is really going to help you find a new job.”
Me - “What do I have to do to come and get some help with my resume”
RM - “We have great program, oyu need to come in for an orientation, and then we have a resume class”
Me - “I dont really need a class, just some help with my resume”
RM - “Most people dont the resume that they’ll have after they get through our class”
Me - “I just need to sit down with someone and go over my resume, and help me work through any rough points. It shoudn’t take too much time.”
RM - “I’m sensing some urgency”
By this time, i was getting frustrated, since when is it so hard to get something that someone else HAS ALREADY PAID FOR!?
Finally, I agreed to come in and take classes. The resume class did not teach me anything I didn’t already know. But I went to a brain storming sesion, and got some one on one advice. This was two whole days! Not even the chance to really get my resume finished.
Look - the last time I checked, It really takes about 3 or 4 days to get your resume right. It’s never going to be perfect, someone will always have problems with it. But get several people to buy off on it, and get through 1 interview with it, and you know you have a good product.
Anyway, these Right Management people were no help at all.
Here’s the worst part, they callled me TWO MONTHS later! “To find out how things are going.”
At the end, I just out and out asked “Look, can I talk to a human?”
“We have a really good networking class that can help get you through…”
“Good for you, when can I come in and talk face to face with a person?”
“What part of this do you need help with? We have a very good networking classes.”
“OK, but when can I talk to human being?”
After all that, it was - “Ohhh, you can come in and talk to someone anytime you like, I can scehdule some time with a counselor tomorrow.”
“Thanks, go ahead and do that”
I skipped the appointment, and got a job that day.
Right Management can kiss my ass! They can’t even listen to their customer’s needs!
